BBF has always looked for ways to give back to the city that made us. That’s why we launched Brewed to Give – to raise up Bristol communities with a 2% tax on total brewery sales. Over the next 12 months, we are donating £100k of stock, space and direct support to150 charities and good causes across our city.
But we know this is a drop in the ocean in terms of the investment that our city needs to enable every person, in every community to thrive. 76% of our 2023 community partners told us that the demand for their services has significantly increased in the last three years whilst 52% said they were at risk of having to reduce/cease some services if they didn’t secure more.
Not ones to side step a challenge, we knew we could do more. And that’s where we got to thinking: what if every business that gave a s**t about this city made a similar commitment to reinvest a share of its profits into the community? This could be 2% of total turnover, 2% of sales a selected service, or 2% donation of a particular product etc. This could be in collaboration with BBF, or flying solo. Whatever it looks like, the result is a thriving city, for people and businesses.
When we first mentioned this idea to Yakima Chief Hops – one of our regular suppliers – they jumped at the chance to collaborate. They already invest in the community through their Community Blend programme, but were keen to explore other ways of giving back to UK communities through local breweries. For Bristol, they are donating £2,200 of hops – that’s 2% of our total annual hop contract - to Brewed to Give. So rather than paying Yakima Chief, we have transferred this cash into the 2024 Brewed to Give budget. Score!
But there is more… our brewers will transform these hops into world class BBF beer, which will be sold to independent venues around Bristol. 2% of every sale will go into next years Brewed to Give budget. Double win!
The team at Yakima Chief Hops wanted to know where their support was going and what impact it would have. After exploring a stack of amazing projects, the Bristol Bisons seemed like the perfect fit. Not only are they are moving mountains when it comes to inclusivity within rugby (and have a gained a horde of trophies on the way), they love a beer and need our support to welcome new people to their community.
